The International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons (ICBUW, www.icbuw.eu ) is pleased to announce the publication of My Last Battle: A U.S. Air Force Veteran’s Lifelong Mission to Expose and Ban Uranium Weapons by Damacio A. Lopez.

Damacio has been a steadfast advocate for the elimination of uranium weapons for decades. In 2003, he was one of the co-founders of ICBUW, helping to build the international movement that continues today to challenge the use of depleted uranium weapons.

My Last Battle is much more than a veteran’s memoir. It is a deeply personal account of Damacio’s lifelong campaign to expose the consequences of uranium weapons and build support for their prohibition. Drawing on his experiences in the U.S. Air Force, his work with communities affected by uranium weapons, and decades of international advocacy, the book connects his personal journey with the broader struggle for disarmament, human rights, and environmental protection.

Damacio’s work has taken him from grassroots campaigns in his home community of Socorro, New Mexico, to the United Nations and to communities affected by uranium weapons in Iraq, Croatia, and elsewhere. He has worked through organizations including the International Depleted Uranium Study Team and Veterans for Peace and has helped bring the issue to wider audiences through the International Uranium Film Festival.

As ICBUW Co-Chair Prof. Dr. Manfred Mohr writes in the book’s foreword, Damacio’s enduring contribution is not only his own advocacy, but his ability to inspire and mobilize others. That commitment remains evident today.

The book concludes with ICBUW’s Global Action Call and the Draft Convention to Ban Uranium Weapons, underscoring the continuing need for international action. Although uranium weapons remain the subject of growing international concern and their use may be conceived as violating international humanitarian, human rights and environmental law, there is still no binding global treaty prohibiting their development, production, possession, or transfer.

My Last Battle is therefore both a record of a decades-long struggle and a call to continue it. Damacio invites readers to join the effort to achieve a comprehensive international ban on uranium weapons—a goal that remains at the heart of ICBUW’s work today.
