The 1192nd hour of Genoa, dedicated to Paola Manduca

We are saddened to hear of the passing away of Prof. Paola Manduca, biologist and geneticist. For many years she was part of the ICBUW advisory board. She was a talented researcher on the effects of wars on health and in particular on reproductive health, and a great fighter for the defense of Palestinian rights, with particular attention to mothers and children. For years she worked in the GAZA hospitals. Her work and her research were her passion. Those who knew her personally knew how passionately she could speak and empathize with the people who suffered under war and occupation. Prof. Paola Manduca has been a point of reference for the scientific community and for international solidarity networks, collaborating with ISDE – Doctors for the Environment and engaging in research on epigenetics and pollution. Despite her precarious health condition, she continued to fight for Palestinian rights until the end, combining scientific rigor and civil passion.

She was chair of the New Weapons Research Group (NWEG) in Italy and has analyzed the impact of unconventional weapons in the wars and conflicts in Lebanon, Iraq and especially in the Gaza Strip. Her research has exposed the devastating consequences of wars on the health of civilian populations.
